A historic home renovation needs to strike the right balance between historic and modern design. For this 1920s bungalow, Holly Thompson Design maintained original architectural features while updating the home’s infrastructure and adding square footage to make the home functional for 21st-century living.
Holly’s favorite design feature: The vintage elements in the new addition that made the new and old sections of the 1920s bungalow tie together
The Story
Holly Thompson Design reimagined this full home through full-service interior design. Holly salvaged and reused original details of the 1920s bungalow such as doors, fireplaces, and hardwood floors, which helped retain the vintage charm that drew the homeowner in the first place.
1920s Bungalow Style
The homeowner wanted to add square footage with a sunroom and larger kitchen suite. Holly created an interior design plan for the addition that honors the original architecture, yet brings in touches of modern design.
For example, the original kitchen was small and lacked a dishwasher and gas range. The new custom kitchen and pantry works with the 100-year-old home but with updated functionality. The custom kitchen brings the best of both design eras, with modern lighting alongside vintage barstools, and classic cream cabinetry with a modern subway tile backsplash and classy gray-and-white checkered floors.
